Since our founding in 2021, we’ve been dedicated to creating a welcoming platform for new filmmakers and making independent cinema accessible to communities often overlooked by mainstream media and the wider industry.
We’re proud to have screened over 420 independent films and presented 44 awards to date, and we’re thrilled in 2024 to have become a BIFA-qualifying festival for British Short Films, and our work continues to be supported by the BFI Film Audience Network.
So, why should you submit your short film to Sunrise?
Here our are top four reasons:
We Support Emerging Filmmakers and Diverse Stories
At Sunrise, we’re committed to finding and showcasing talent that might otherwise go unseen. If you’re a first-time filmmaker, especially one whose work hasn’t been picked up by other festivals or the ‘typical’ big hitters, we’d love to consider your film. We’re dedicated to creating a platform where new stories and perspectives are not just welcome but celebrated.
- Our Programming Prioritises Underrepresented Stories
The Sunrise Film Festival focuses on stories that are often underrepresented across the industry and on our screens. Here’s what we look for in our programming:
- First-Time Filmmakers: We prioritise films made by those taking their first steps into the world of filmmaking, helping to amplify their voices in a supportive environment.
- Female and Non-Binary Stories: Our 2024 festival lineup was over 60% F-rated, meaning it prominently featured work by female and non-binary filmmakers. We’re passionate about supporting these perspectives and creating a balanced space for all creators.
- LGBTQ+ Narratives: We welcome films that explore LGBTQ+ themes, seeking to give space to voices and stories that capture the diversity of our society.
- Mental Health and Lived Experience: Personal stories of mental health challenges or life experiences are powerful and resonate with our audiences. We’re especially interested in films that bring honesty and depth to these subjects.
- Social and Environmental Issues: In an era of change, films that address social justice, environmental concerns, and community matters are incredibly important. We want to provide a platform for stories that inspire awareness and action.
- Other Underrepresented Topics: If you’ve made a film that doesn’t fit neatly into mainstream categories, that’s okay. We welcome unique perspectives on topics and experiences that audiences may rarely get to see.
- A Real Chance to Connect with Audiences
We’re not just a festival – we’re a community. Our mission is to bring fresh, diverse stories to the big screen for audiences who may not have access to independent cinema. We want every filmmaker we showcase to have a meaningful connection with viewers who truly appreciate their work.
Our screenings take place in the town’s largest theatre, and your films are showcase on one of the largest cinema screens on East Coast in front of audiences often missed by larger festivals. At Sunrise, your film won’t just be another title on the schedule; it will have a genuine chance to resonate and inspire.
- Industry Recognition and Growth
As a BIFA-qualifying festival, Sunrise offers a platform for filmmakers who are just beginning their journey to gain significant industry recognition. By submitting to us, you have the chance to join the ranks of filmmakers whose work is not only seen and appreciated but also celebrated through highly regarded awards and critical acclaim.
If you have a story that deserves a stage, submit your short film to the Sunrise Film Festival.
We’re here to celebrate the unique perspectives, stories, and talents of new filmmakers, and we can’t wait to see what you have to share.
You can submit to our 4th edition taking place in 2025 via Filmfreeway until 20th December 2024, click here to visit our filmfreeway page.
